Thymidine one of the four major nucleosides in DNA can be replaced by a radioactive analogue, BrdU.

Like Thymidine, BrdU is taken up by cells and neurons during S-phase of mitosis.

BrdU labelling can be  visualised with immunocytochemical techniques, allowing and estimation of the total amounts of neurons observed.

In the adult brain, new neurons (neurogenesis) can emerge in the dentate gyrus.
